SIMORC project started !

8 July 2005

The SIMORC project started at 1st June 2005 in agreement with the European Commission. SIMORC is short for System of Industry Metocean data for the Offshore and Research Communities. The aim is to deliver an operational service on the Internet, featuring a searchable metadata index and a database of the metocean data sets collected by the oil & gas industry at various sites on the globe in the past and continuing at present. The SIMORC service will provide storage, retrieval and access to the data sets and will serve as the future portal for industry metocean data sets. The metadata index will be public domain and provide sufficient information to allow the user to assess the relevance of the data sets to their particular interest.

SIMORC is a joint effort by major oil & gas companies, members of the International Association of Oil & Gas Producers (OGP), that will bring in their considerable metocean data sets, and a number of international oceanographic data management experts (MARIS, BODC, IODE).

The SIMORC project is supported by the European Commission as part of the Sixth Framework Programme under sub-priority 1.1.6.3 - Global change and Ecosystems.

A kick-off meeting of the Coordination Group of partners was organized at 8th July 2005. The meeting took place in the offices of the coordinator MARIS in Leidschendam - The Netherlands. One of the outcomes of the kick-off meeting was the decision to widen the scope of the SIMORC service and to focus not only on datasets, but also to undertake activities to construct and to maintain a metadirectory of hindcast studies, that have been contracted by the industry.
